News about Publication—and Promotion (updated)

Mingus Speaks is well along in production. Our publication date is set for May 2013, when advance copies to reviewers and bookstores will be in place. My publisher, University of California Press, has been great to work with. The book is up on their site, and you can preorder.

Response so far to advance proofs on the part of reviewers has been wonderful. We’ve heard positive notes from Gene Santoro, Nat Hentoff and Sue Mingus, among others. See their comments on our Reviews page.

Book editors have shown “solid interest.” An Italian publisher has been signed to publish the book.

Now we need to get the online word out about the book. I hope all of you who read this blog will send in comments so I can know of your interest and respond. We’ll be running special features from time to time, so keep an eye out for them.

As of February 23rd, we have a Facebook page and are connecting with fans on Twitter.

Over the last seven years I’ve collected over 500 links to persons, blogs and websites with an interest in Mingus. We are now in the process of contacting many of them.

Finally, Michael Cuscuna, Mosaic Records and Sue Mingus have released a seven-CD set from Mingus’s great Dolphy-Jordan-Byard period, The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65. There have been many reviews, among them this one describing how Mingus persevered through a tough time.

NPR’s Fresh Air did a review and a podcast, which you can play here.
